Ali Kazma
Born in Istanbul (Turkey) in 1971, lives and works in Istanbul (Turkey).

Ali Kazma is a video artist who received his MA degree from The New School in New York City. In 2000, he returned to Istanbul, where he still resides. His videos raise fundamental questions about the meaning and significance of human activity and labor and the meaning of economy, production, and social organization. He has exhibited his work in the Istanbul Biennial (2001, 2007, 2011), Tokyo Opera City (2001), Istanbul Modern (2004), 9th Havana Biennial (2006), San Francisco Art Institute (2006), Lyon Biennial (2007), The White Chapel Art Gallery, London (2008) as well as in TBA21, Vienna (2011),Kiev Biennial (2012) and São Paolo Biennial (2012). Kazma, who holds the Nam June Paik Award (2010) has also represented Turkey at the 55th Venice Biennial with his video series “Resistance”.

"'Play' stages the representation of the body through an artistic discipline; the theatre. Shooting the Wooster Group’s Hamlet rehearsals and the actual performance, Ali Kazma takes the audience into a haunted world where the borders between the past and the present, the original and remake, real and representation are skilfully blurred; a world of ghosts that evokes contemplation on memory, loss and death in a seemingly contrasting technological set-up."
